Our Story
The Indo-European Sciences and Arts Association (IESAA) is a non-profit association
committed to strengthen the relationship between Portugal/Europe and India, by promoting the
development and dissemination of scientific and technological research and artistic
creations in diversified areas. The Association is composed of members from various walks of
life, of Portuguese and Indian origin and hopes to develop its role further leveraging on
the collective knowledge and experiences of these members, on the premise that cultural
evolution is crucial for the growth and formation of the individual in a global society that
seeks to be integrated and intellectual.
Sónia Ferreira, was born in Lisbon, Portugal. She graduated in Law from Faculdade de
Direito da Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa in 2001. From 2001 to 2003 she had the
professional internship in Law. She is registered in the Portuguese General Lawyers
Council since 2001 and is practicing lawyer activity since 2003 on an uninterrupted
and full-time basis since 2003. She has been responsible for the Legal Department of
a group of companies in the Pharmaceutical Industry since 2006. Her language skills
are Portuguese, English and Spanish. As hobbies she enjoys being with family and
friends, traveling, reading and playing sports.

Manuel Vieira Casinha
José holds a Computer Science Degree, an MBA and several industry certifications.
José Casinha has more than 20 years in ICT industry in Telecommunications and IT
Services provider’s organizations. Experience on providing technology solutions,
managed services and compliance projects for private and public organizations.
Auditing and/or consulting experience in Information Security, Business Continuity,
IT Service and Risk Management. José is summer and sea addicted. Technology,
off-road, traveling, cooking and farming are some of his hobbies.

Francisco de Almeida Rodrigues
António Francisco de Almeida Rodrigues Domingos was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He
received the diploma in Finance from Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, known
as ISCEF. He is member nº 836 of the Portuguese General Economist Council. He is
member nº 4134 of the Portuguese General Accountant Council. After practicing, since
1973, his profession in several companies, he dedicated himself, since 1986, to the
area of Economic and Financial and Accounting Consulting. He is a partner in
consulting companies with particular interest in the financial and tax areas. He
belongs to several associations with respect to culture and humanitarian nature. As
a hobby, he enjoys reading and writing and likes to take part in gatherings
dedicated to cultural and humanitarian causes.
Hiren
Canacsinh
Hiren Canacsinh was born in Inhambane, Mozambique. He received the Doctor degree
with Distinction in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2015 from Instituto
Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa (IST-UL), Portugal. He is currently Adjunct
Professor at Lisbon Engineering Institute (ISEL – Instituto Superior de Engenharia
de Lisboa), teaching Fundamentals of Pulsed Power, Power Electronics and Digital
Systems in the Electrical Engineering Department. His main research interests
include Power Electronics, Pulsed Power Systems and Pulsed Power Topologies. He is a
Integrated Researcher at the Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores
Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID). As hobbies, he likes to
appreciate food with friends and family and enjoys playing badminton and table
tennis.
Shiva
Nand Tripathi
Shiva Nand Tripathi was born in a remote village in UP, India. He has been living in
Portugal for 15 years and currently working in the area of Information Technology at
a Financial Services company. At the age of 45, life has been an amazing journey for
him who was initially schooled in a remote village in India, only having seen
electricity at the age of 8 and a computer at the age of 22. It has been a
transformation since then, having done M.Sc. in Information Technology and made a
career in a field that he had not heard of until the age of 22. His work is his
hobby and when not working, he likes to spend time with family/friends, watching
Bollywood movies and cricket, walking in the Lisbon city, playing badminton, table
tennis and chess.

Vaguela
Guirish Vaguela (or Girish Waghela) was born in Margao, Goa, India, and soon moved
to Lourenço Marques, Mozambique where he did his basic schooling. He has a B.Sc.
(Microbiology) from Gujarat University, Ahmedabad and an M. Sc. (Biochemistry) from
M. S. University, Baroda, India. In Portugal since 1982, his interests and work
moved him to learn Computer Science specifically to Software Development in which he
has worked for the last 40 years in various software Projects connected to the Shoe
Industry (from Manufacturing to Retail), the Pharmaceutical Industry
(Communications) and even Real State (Consultancy). Currently he is one of the
partners in KSI (Kyaia Soluções Informáticas) where he oversees the Development
Division. His other interests include Literature (Portuguese, English, Indian) and
Genealogy (he maintains a site with a Genealogy Tree of his Family and their
Relationships!) and was one of the founding members of ISHA Artes (a Portugal based
non-profit organization working towards promoting Indian Culture).
Bijal
Himatlal Modi
Bijal Himatlal Modi was born in Maputo, Mozambique. She has B.Sc. degree in Pharmacy
from Instituto Superior de Ciências e Tecnologia de Moçambique. She did a
post-graduation (MBA) in Business Administration from ISCTE-Executive Education,
Lisbon. In Mozambique, she worked as technical director in the Heart Institute of
Mozambique (ICOR) and as technical & regulatory director in Medis Farmacêutica, Lda.
Currently she is working in the Quality Assurance Department in Sofarimex – Chemical
and Pharmaceutical Industry, Lisbon (Sofarimex – Indústria Química e Farmaceutica,
S.A.). Her interests are dance, music and gastronomy.
Rajeshree Amratlal Vanza Vaguela
Rajeshree Amratlal Vanza Vaguela was born in Tanga, Tanzania where she studied in a
multicultural, multireligious and multilingual environment. Having studied Science
and trained as a teacher, she gave classes in Biology to secondary school students
and later worked as a laboratory technician before migrating to Portugal. Her flair
for languages – Kiswahili, Gujarati, Hindi, together with English and Portuguese –
both spoken and written, has led her to her present profession as Interpreter and
Translator for various Portuguese Authorities and Institutions. She gives workshops
of Gujarati and Hindi Languages and Indian Gastronomy. Other interests include
Indian Classical Dance – Kathak for which she attends weekly classes. She has since
her youth participated in various humanitarian associations like Interact and
Rotaract and also in Religious Youth Service projects in Poland and Hungary. She is
one of the founding members of Isha Artes that promotes cultural exchange between
India and Portugal. She is an avid reader of Gujarati, Hindi, English and
Portuguese.

Hermínio Ninitas Lagarto
João Lagarto was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He holds a PhD in Sustainable Energy
Systems from the Technical Superior Institute of the University of Lisbon under the
MIT-Portugal program and he is a researcher of the INESC-ID He has a 5-year degree
in electrical engineering from the Lisbon Engineering Superior Institute. He is an
Adjunct Professor in the Electrical Engineering, Energy and Automation Department of
the Lisbon Engineering Superior Institute where he teaches power systems related
subjects. His research interests are power systems economics and electricity
markets.
Sérgio
Faias
Sérgio Faias has a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a
Master degree in Mechanical Engineering from Technical University of Lisbon
(IST-UTL) and a 5-year degree in Electromechanical Engineering from Polytechnic
Institute of Setúbal. He is professor at the Power Systems Unit of the Lisbon
Engineering Superior Institute (ISEL) since 2001. From 2012 to 2016, he worked as
Expert in the Infrastructures and Networks Department of the Portuguese National
Regulatory Authority for Energy (ERSE). Since 2017, he is president of the
Supervisory Board of Cercizimbra, a cooperative founded in 1976, dedicated to
education, welfare and lifelong support of more than 1.200 disabled children, young
people and adults. Since 2018, he is president of the General-Assembly of Liga dos
Amigos de Sesimbra, a non-profit association founded in 1951, dedicated to promoting
the culture and social-economic development of the Sesimbra region. Currently he is
the president of the Executive Board of Docapesca – Portos e Lotas S.A., the
Portuguese port authority responsible for fishing ports and marinas. From 2016 to
2020, he was member of the Executive Board, responsible for the departments of
Infrastructures, IT, Safety and Maintenance and for the five decentralized
delegations.
Himatlal
Parshotam
Himatlal Parshotam Modi was born in Lourenço Marques (nowadays Maputo), Mozambique.
Currently he is retired. He dedicated most of his business activity in the field of
textiles. He collaborated with Hindu Community of Maputo since his youth, and had
functions as Secretary, President of the Audit Board and lately as Advisory Council
Member. He likes to be with family and as hobbies he likes to read and see
documentaries.
Anjali
Ariscrisna
Anjali is a versatile, forward-thinking, and avid young marketer, entrenched with
passion, enthusiasm, and perseverance acquired across a wide range of
responsibilities such as development and management of both offline and online
marketing strategies, digital content, content creation, marketing copywriting, lead
generation, reporting, direct marketing, and branding. Part hedonist, a serial
student, and a wanderer of sorts, she’s sensitive to details and observe as such.
Her passions and interests range between the outdoors, the media, communication,
art, traveling as well as off the beaten path, hospitality, cuisine, design, beauty,
and décor.
Antero
Marques
Antero Marques was born in Guarda (Pousade), Portugal. He received the B.Sc. degree
in Finance from Instituto Superior de Economia de Lisboa, Universidade Técnica in
1979. Among a wide experience within the Finance filed, it is underlined some recent
activities. He was a partner and manager at a Management Service company. He was a
Founder Shareholder and Director of two Limited Companies in Mozambique. He is
currently a member of the Audit Board of several companies and attorney for an
Italian Capital company. He enjoys reading, music and being surrounded by his
grandchildren.

José Simões was born in Coentral, Castanheira de Pera. He has a B. Sc. degree in
Mechanical Engineering and a M. Sc. degree in Project Management. He is currently an
Adjunct Professor at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa. He was an
entrepreneur in the areas of Private Education, Metalworking, Civil Construction and
Advertising and Gifts.

José Agostinho was born in Silves, Portugal. He received the B.Sc degree in
Economics and Finance with specialization of enterprise, management and organization
from Instituto Superior de Economia da Universidade de Lisboa (ISEG-UL). He has an
Advanced Management course from INSEAD-Business School in Fontainebleau, France. He
has a diverse background in auditing, reporting and management control. He Worked as
an External Audit/Consulting at Arthur Young Company. He was Head of Administrative
and Financial Services at Tecnicar Lda, He was Head of Internal Audit Department of
the ITT companies Group in Portugal and also performed works in Spain, and Brazil
for companies like Standard Electric, Yellow Pages, Sheraton, Oliva industries and
Oliva Comercial. He was a Reporting manager and Controller at Standard
Eletrica-Portugal. He was a Financial Manager at Alcatel-Portugal and Financial
Director at Alcatel Comunicação de Empresas, NextiraOne Portugal and
IS.nexti-Management and Technological Consulting. He was a Management Control
Director at Dimension Data Portugal. Currently he is officially retired, but he
performs some business consultancy works, He likes to travel and to know other
cultures. His favorite hobbies are organic farming and sculpture (in wood and
stone). In sports he likes to ski, cycling and country walks. He also plays long
tennis and a little golf.
Vision
The Indo-European Science and Arts Association pretend to be a reference association in the
society within the scope of its intervention. We intend to develop adjusted responses that
meet the needs of the IESAA audience and general population. IESAA intends also to be
involved in the design of new policies and guidelines within the scope of its areas of
intervention.
Mission
Indo-European Science and Arts Association intends to create a collaboration platform
between national and international entities to strengthen the relationship between Portugal,
Europe and India in terms of the development and dissemination of scientific research and
artistic creation in its diversified areas.
Our Objectives
To pursuit the corporate purpose, IESAA proposes, among others,
1.
Promotion and cooperation between public and private organizations,
with a view to
the economic and strategic development of policies to promote research in the fields
of science, arts and culture;
2.
Promotion of the organization of scientific, artistic creation or other events
related to the dissemination of science, arts and culture;
3.
Foster external relations, in the field of policies for organizing actions within
the scope of science, arts and culture training and information events.
4.
Promote knowledge transfer actions.
5.
Support individual or collective persons within the scope of the Association’s
corporate purpose.
6.
Encourage the exchange between Portugal, Europe and India, in respect of sharing of
information, ideas and experiences of common interest, assuming the link with
Portuguese speaking countries in the world.

Creation of working networks between national and international teams.
